Jahrhundert Die Arbeit hat die Entwicklung von drei geistlichen Frauengemeinschaften der Steiermark, der Grazer Karmelitinnen, der Benediktinerinnen von St. Gabriel (1919 bis 2008 auf Burg Bertholdstein bei Fehring) und der 1865 als Hausgemeinschaft gegründeten und 1928 als kirchliche Kongregation bischöflichen Rechts eingerichteten Vorauer Marienschwestern, die diese seit der zweiten Hälfte des 19. bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts genommen haben, zum Inhalt. Dabei wird nicht nur die Geschichte der einzelnen Kommunitäten aus historischer und kirchenhistorischer Perspektive erfasst, sondern auch der Struktur der einzelnen Konvente und dem Wandel, den diese Gemeinschaften, insbesondere im letzten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts, durchlaufen sind, ein besonderes Augenmerk gewidmet und auf Fragestellungen, die der wissenschaftliche Diskurs der beiden letzten Jahrzehnten aufgeworfen hatte, wie die sogenannte Säkularisierungsthese, den „Aktionsraum“ Religion und dessen Strukturierung und Konnotierung sowie den postkonziliaren Transformationsprozess in geistlichen Frauenge-meinschaften, eingegangen. Weitere Schwerpunkte bilden Untersuchungen zu den Mitgliedern der drei Kommunitäten nach prosopographischen Kriterien und die Darstellung des normativen Regelwerks, das den monastischen Alltag der einzelnen Gemeinschaften fixierte und dem die idealtypische Lebens- und Alltagsordnung der einzelnen Gemeinschaft entnommen werden kann, in dem sich „geweihtes Leben“ vollzog. Anhand ausgewählter Aspekte des – im weitesten Sinn – monastischen Alltags werden normative Ansprüche und deren Umsetzung, Übereinstimmung und Diskrepanz, grundgelegte Charismen, postuliertes wie kultiviertes Selbst-verständnis, Wandel und Brüche, Positionierungen und Neupositionierungen unter-sucht und dargestellt. | ||

Structure and transformation of religious female societies in the 19th and 20th century The subject of this thesis is the development of three religious female societies in Styria from the second half of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century, namely the Carmelite Nuns in Graz, the Benedictine Nuns of St. Gabriel (1919 to 2008 in Bertholdstein Castle near Fehring) and the Sisters of Mary of Vorau, founded 1865 as a house community and established as ecclesiastical congregation of episcopalian law in 1928. The thesis will not only deal with the history of the three communities from an historical and church historical perspective, but also with the structure of the individual convents and the transformations the societies underwent, especially in the last third of the 20th century. In doing so, issues which have been raised in the scientific discourse of the last two decades, like the socalled thesis of secularization, the ‚action space’ religion and its structuring and connotation, as well as the postconciliar transformation processes in religious female societies, will be addressed. Further focal points are prosopographical studies of the members of the three communities and the description of the normative body of rules, which determines the daily routines of the societies. These norms of the universal church as well as of the particluar law, formed the framework of the „consecrated life“ and codified the ideal way of life in the individual societies. Based on chosen aspects of the monastic everyday life, the implementation, compliances and discrepancies, underlying charisms, postulated as well as cultivated self-conceptions, transformations and discontinuities, positionings and re-positionings of the normative requirements are analysed and delineated | ||
